New ‘Drive’ initiative opens historic links to Scottish residents
In a groundbreaking move to make golf more inclusive and accessible, the St Andrews Links Trust has launched its new “Drive” initiative, offering Scottish residents the opportunity to play the world-famous Old Course at St Andrews for just £42.50 (approx. $50 USD) — a dramatic reduction from the usual peak-season fee of £340.
This initiative, running from May to October 2025, represents a significant step in opening up one of golf’s most sacred venues to a broader audience. A total of 179 discounted tee times will be offered across several courses under the Trust’s management — including the Old, Castle, Jubilee, and Eden courses — making room for over 700 golfers to experience the sport in its most historic setting.
The program officially kicks off on May 21, with a ballot for 11 two-ball tee times on the Old Course. Additionally, a themed week from May 27 to June 3 on the Eden Course will pay tribute to military personnel, emergency services, volunteers, and disabled golfers — offering them specially priced access and recognition.
To qualify, applicants must reside in Scotland and must not hold a current St Andrews Links Yearly Ticket, ensuring that this unique opportunity benefits new players and those who haven’t had regular access.
Neil Coulson, Chief Executive of St Andrews Links Trust, said, “As the home of golf, St Andrews Links Trust takes its responsibility to the sport incredibly seriously. That is why we are so excited to launch a new initiative offering golfers across Scotland the opportunity to play our historic and iconic courses at reduced rates.”
By removing a major financial barrier, this initiative reinforces the democratic roots of the sport — echoing the days when golf was played by townspeople on public land. With the “Drive” initiative, St Andrews reaffirms its role not only as the home of golf but also as a home for golfers of all backgrounds.
